Indocafe The White House

Indocafe remains one of the most underrated Peranakan restaurants around. The food's consistently exceptional and service is dependably hospitable. We usually takeaway meals here, on our way home, but every once a while, we'll sit down in the elegant black-and-white colonial mansion for a little spot of pampering by the staff.

The Hee Peow Tng ($16), a delicate but potent broth was brimming with pig's stomach, cabbage wong bok, fish maw and handrolled prawn balls. Best fish maw soup ever, and a recommended must-try.

The fork-tender Rendang Sapi ($32), slathered in a luscious gravy, was full-bodied, intensely rich and spicy.

The Babi Pongteh ($22), simmered in a mellow but well-rounded fermented bean sauce and chunked with potatoes and shitakes, was decadently fatty, just the way it should be.

The Chap Chye ($14), a melange of cabbage, prawns, black fungus, pork skin, carrots, glass noodles, and beancurd skin stewed in a prawn-based soup, was sweet and robust.

The inky Buah Keluak Rice ($16), intensely aromatic with a tangy scent, was infused with the nutty piquancy of keluak paste, and dotted with cashews, prawns and shredded pork.

The refillable Keropok Basket ($4) of the prawn, fish and belinjau varieties, was sided by a tart achar and salted fish pickles. Always an appetizing start to any meal here.
