Skinny Pizza, Raffles City

Having recently been introduced to the Skinny Pizza concept a few days ago by my colleagues, I was eager to see what the Hubs thought of Skinny Pizza.  Skinny Pizza was borne out of Singaporeans' love for thin crust pizzas. It actually brings the thin crust formula to a whole new level. For people who love carbs but can't have too much of it (i.e. carbs = fat), Skinny Pizza is perfect. The pizza bases are approximately the thickness of 2 pappadoms put together. That's it. Now, you can indulge in pizza without the immense guilty pangs after!

While I like the fact that the pizza base is very thin, and crisp, aside from the truffle mushroom flavour, I'm not quite liking the rest of the topping flavours, which are very localised. I still prefer my pizzas classically Italian, i.e. wood-fired, thin crust but still chewy, and with typical Italian toppings, salami, Parma ham, mozzarella, olives, mushrooms.

It's little wonder that the Wild Truffled Mushroom ($24) is the most popular flavour at Skinny Pizza. I'd venture that, if anything, the truffle mushroom flavour is the only pizza to get here. Because the pizza base is so thin, each pizza is cut into quarters so you get to wrap it up like a burrito to eat.

The distinctive scent of truffles hits you like an oncoming truck immediately when you open the pizza box, and you start salivating. The generous loads of truffle mash, shitake and white button mushrooms are juicy and scrumptous, while rocket leaves lend a peppery lift and crisp red onions provide an astringent sharpness.

The Braised Veal with Onion Marmalade ($25) wasn't particularly good. It suffered from the one-ingredient-too-many syndrome. The caramelised onions were way too sweet and overpowered the braised veal. Also, the potatoes seemed very extra. Either you have the potatoes and do away with the pizza base, or you loose the potatoes and keep the base.

That said, the braised veal, when eaten on its own, was fork tender. In fact, it was plastic fork tender. Richly aromatic and delicious.
