Bali Thai, Novena Square

I previously reviewed that although the food at Renn Thai is authentic and suitably spicy, their portions are tiny and prices exorbitant. Bali Thai, its sister restaurant, with its more wallet-friendly pricing, provides a more value-for-money meal. In comparison, a pot of tom yum soup at Renn Thai costs $18 whereas the same dish at Bali Thai will cost only about $13. The mixed vegetables in oyster sauce is $4 less while the grilled chicken is $7 less at Bali Thai than at Renn Thai.

However, what you pay more for elegance and refinement at Renn Thai, you sacrifice that for cheaper price points at Bali Thai. So, you get more rustic, homestyled cooking in a simpler, plainer surroundings at Bali Thai. This is a place you go to for run-of-the-mill, cheap and fairly good Thai and Indonesian cze char fare. Yes, Bali Thai additionally serves Indonesian cuisine, as well as the usual Thai dishes so you get to indulge in both Indonesian staples such as beef rendang as well as Thai classics such as green curry.

We started off with a sizzling hotplate of Tao Hoo Talay ($12.50) beancurd with seafood, which was really indistinguishable from our local cze char dish of hotplate beancurd. This was a very no-fuss, standard dish, with a garlicky eggy oyster sauce based gravy slathered over the silky beancurd and the requisite prawns, squid and fish slices.


The Gai Phad Bai Krapow ($10.80) stir-fried chicken with basil leaves was also no-fuss, spicy and fragrant, with baby corn and long beans lending texture and fibre to the dish.
 

The Satay Madura ($9.80 for half dozen) skewered chicken from the Indonesian menu was tender and moist, with a chunky peanut sauce for dipping.


Belinjau crackers ($3) were paired with a watery sour-ish but potent chilli sauce.

Queensway Shopping Centre , where locals flock to for all things sports and optical-related, is also known for good laksa. There are 2 laksa stalls, within a stone's throw of each other, both claiming to serve up the best. Both tout to be affiliates of world-famous Katong ones, and the accolades, writeups and publicity plastered all the utilitarian facades will attest to the fierce competition. Seating at both eateries is cramped and constrained, so dining is really a touch-and-go affair. Both are manned by efficient, if a little curt, bevy of staff, and so turnover is high. Good news for the 5-minute-on-average long line of diners waiting their turn. ABC Brickworks Food Centre

싱가포르에 호커 센터 중에서 에이비씨 브릭워케 호커 센터를 우리가 제일 좋아해요. 실제로 싱가포르에서 가장 크고 유명한 호커 센터 중 하나예요. 가끔 외국인 여행자들이 이 호커 센터에서 식사하고 관광도 해요.  호커 음식은 내가 우리 나라 싱가포르에서 제일 사랑하는 것이에요. 호커 푸드는 내 컴포트 푸드여서 내 마음에 들어와요. 음식도 싸고 맛있고 종류도 많아요. 해외여행 가면 그리운 음식이 호커푸드인데 싱가포르에 돌아와서 가장 먼저 먹는 음식이 박초미예요.  박초미은 아마도 내가 제일 좋아하는 호커푸드예요. 나는 식초맛을 좋아하고 버섯볶음이 제일 맛있고 용기가 제일 맛있어요.   =========================   ABC Brickworks is one of the more well-known, and beloved, hawker centres in SG. Gong Yuan Ma La Tang

C'est la saison de la soupe. Meme si on n'a pas les quarte saisons à Singapour, le temps devient "pas aussi chaud" vers la fin de l'année; c'est cette période que j'ai envie de soupes et de ragoûts...ils sont très très réconfortants!  Dans d'autres nouvelles, les lumières et décorations de Noël à Rue Orchard sont allumées!! Je ne suis pas sûr pourquoi, mais voir les lumières de Noël me rend toujours heureux. Je pense, c'est peut-être parce que les lumières de Noël signifient l'approche de Noël, ma saison préférée de tous. Même si on ne fête pas Noël pour des raisons religieuses, c'est toujours le temps de la gentillesse et l'amour, toutes les qualités que j'apprécie et chérit. Et parce que tous nos proches resteront à Singapour, nous inaugurerons et passerons les fêtes de Noël et du Nouvel An avec eux à la maison au lieu.
