Hua Ting Restaurant

I love lazy Sundays. What's more, I love lazy Sunday dim sum brunches. The languid pace, the relaxed vibe, what's not to like?

We went to Hua Ting for brunch over the weekend. Hua Ting's consistently garnered a bunch of dining awards and always ranks high on every food gourmand's list of best Cantonese restaurants. Hua Ting manages a fine balance between the traditional and modern, so the food's always a creative twist on classic favourites.

The Pan Fried Cod Fish Dumpling with Sweet Preserved Cabbage ($4.80) is an unexpectedly delicious concoction. We absolutely loved this. So much so we promptly ordered another portion.

The oily and soft cod, the piquant and crunchy mei cai were encased in a chewy dumpling, pan fried to a slightly charred crust. This was an exquisite balance of textures and flavours.

The Steamed Siew Mai with Fresh Scallops ($4.80) with juicy fresh pork, a whole succulent scallop and diced mushrooms was classic fare done well. This had a delectably bouncy texture.

The Deep Fried Bean Skin Roll with Prawns ($4.80) was one of the better ones we've tried, with that strip of seaweed giving a bitter/briny edge to the dish. Prawns were juicy and sweet, beancurd skin was crisp without being oily.

The Steamed Cheong Fun with Char Siew ($5.20) was a slight disappointment. The rice roll was a tad too thick for our liking.

The Steamed Carrot Cake with Waxed Meat ($3.90) was yummy too, soft and flavoursome without being too salty.

The Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($3.90) were good but not stellar like some of their other dishes. The buns to barbecued pork ratio was a little higher than we'd like.
