Sheng Siong Chinese New Year Goodies

You know how it is during a festival, prices are suddenly raised sky-high for festive goodies that cost cheap to make and are usually cheap (at other times of the year anyway). A jar of premium pineapple tarts for Chinese New Year will cost an astounding 50 bucks for a tiny jar!

Another phenomenon is that most people will rush to place orders so that their homes are well-stocked with festive treats come Chinese New Year. You'll see horrendous snaking queues for bak kwa and other festive goodies.

The BF and I are different. Firstly, we don't feel a need to join the mad rush and stock up before Chinese New Year. Instead, we'll hit Sheng Siong on the first day it reopens after Chinese New Year and get our fill of our favourite festive treats, heavily discounted off their already competitive pricing. Secondly, we also don't see a need to buy premium treats. The price is more than double what we pay at Sheng Siong, yet the taste isn't twice as good. Price has got to correlate to quality and taste, doesn't it?

These are two of the items I love at Sheng Siong. We actually got 6 whole jars of each at this year's post-Chinese New Year grocery shopping spree.

Kuih Balulu ($2.50 for a 400g jar), these were crusty on the outside but fluffy and buttery on the inside. One of the best versions I've tried anywhere.

Ampor Nonya Pineapple Tarts ($10.50). Sheng Siong sells a variety of pineapple tarts from several manufacturers, but this is by far the best. The pastry is crumbly and buttery and the pineapple jam is not too sweet. Perfect for gorging all day in front of the telly.

Pineapple Tarts. I prefer the open-faced ones to those covered-up ones.
