Hooked on Heads

Pops organised our reunion dinner at Hooked on Heads this year. He seems to like this place a lot, though I'm not as huge a fan as he is. The food is generally alright but not spectacular.

As usual, the BF and I went to the gym first to work out before stuffing our faces, and Pops came along as well. He's quite the fitness buff as well, he's one of those people who use their lunch hour to work out at the gym.

Pops had pre-ordered the CNY set menu at $168 for 4 persons and $238 for 6 persons. First up was the ubiquitous Yu Sheng (raw fish salad). All of us felt that the salmon fish wasn't fresh, I actually spat mine out. Otherwise, the rest of the festive salad was alright.

 The tossed salad.

The second course was the Fish Maw with Crab Meat Soup. The soup was standard fare, but it was marred by the frozen crab meat, which left a lingering fishy taste on my tongue. Seafood should always be served fresh, not frozen, especially in soups and dishes which employ a lighter cooking method.

The Cereal Prawns was next. This was nice. The prawns were relatively juicy and large, and the fried cereal bits complemented the sweetness of the prawns.

The Steamed Fish Hongkong Style was also far from fresh. It had a very strong fishy smell and taste. Suffice it to say, it was not finished.

TheBroccoli with Pacific Clams and Scallops came up next. This was only okay, and the seafood was fairly fresh.

The Emperor Chicken was probably the nicest dish of the set menu. The gravy was luscious and thick, and the chicken was succulent and well-marinated.

The Fried Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf was nicer than I expected. The fragrant scent of the lotus leaves permeated the well-fried rice.

We supplemented our set menu with a couple of other dishes from the ala carte menu. First was the Nonya Chap Chye ($9), which was rich and aromatic. The assorted vegetables were braised very well. We liked this very much.

The other ala carte dish was the Crispy Home-Made Tofu ($10). The seafood paste-mixed tofu was not bad, very flavourful.

The set menu dessert was the Yam Paste (or nee), sweetened mashed yam that takes on the consistency of a paste. This was unexpectedly good. The yam had a nuanced sweetness and creamy without being overwhelming.

We also ordered extra desserts from the ala carte menu, the Sticky Rice with Mango ($6). This was good. The mango was sweet and the rice was moist.

We last got the Chendol ($4.50), which wasn't very great. There was hardly any gula melaka taste, and the green jelly bits were too grainy.
